Tex And Cano Power Yankees Past Rangers

Yankees 5 vs. Rangers 2
By Larry Barnes | Yankees 'n More
For the second time in as many days, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Texas Rangers had his way for most of the game against the Bronx Bombers.

However, a pair of two-run home runs—by Mark Teixeira in the first inning and Robinson Cano in the eighth—were enough to power the New York Yankees to a 5-2 victory over Derek Holland and the Texas Rangers, on a cold and damp Saturday afternoon in the Bronx.

The homer was the fifth of the season for Tex, who didn't hit his fifth in 2010 until May 8. While the Yankees first baseman is only hitting .234 early this year, his on-base percentage is .351 and his slugging percentage is .574. Tex also added a third RBI on the day with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

Cano's homer in the bottom of the eighth might have been the biggest hit of the day as it yanked away the only momentum the Rangers had built all day. After Texas scored two in the top of the eighth, closing to within a run, Cano's off-the-foul-pole bomb took the two runs right back for New York.

The homer also offered Mariano Rivera some breathing room in the ninth. Insurance isn't always needed for Mo, but Texas is a team that got to the future Hall of Famer twice during the 2010 season, so the extra runs certainly were welcomed today.
