| Yankees 6 at Blue Jays 2 |
It didn't come without some nail-biting moments, but the New York Yankees rode a fantastic performance from Bartolo Colon to a 6-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday night, giving them a split in the two-game series.
Count Alex Rodriguez, who returned for the Yankee lineup Wednesday, among those duely impressed with, but not surprised by, what he saw from Colon.
“I don’t think it’s amazing at all,” Rodriguez said. “I think he’s just a very, very good pitcher. You saw what he did in ’05 when he won the Cy Young. Bartolo’s just a natural pitcher.”
The nervous moments came thanks to a curious move (I'm being kind, since the Yankees won) by Joe Girardi, who decided a 4-run lead in the ninth inning was a good time to bring in the last man on the pitching staff—just-off-the-bus bush leaguer Lance Pendleton—to work to the Jays' potent lineup in their hitter-friendly ballpark.
A walk and a ringing off-the-wall double later and Girardi finally decided to bring in the big guns. With Mariano Rivera unavailable after throwing 25 pitches the night before, Girardi turned to Rafael Soriano, who pitched around a walk (that brought the tying run to the plate, by the way) to earn his first save as a Yankee.
On offense, New York was bolstered by Curtis Granderson, who hit his first triple and sixth home run of the season, scored twice and drove in two. Robinson Cano also droving in a pair of runs with a ground out and a sacrifice fly, and Mark Teixeira had a good night as the dish, going 3-for-5 with three doubles and a run scored.
